Project Description: 

• Instructions to make one vest. Following the directions makes a vest 25” in length.  There is enough yarn to make the vest 30″ in length.  If you want the vest to be longer, you will need more yarn.
• 8-shaft draft.
• 30 EPI, 16 total PPI.
• Width in the reed: 24”.

Equipment Needed:

• 8-shaft loom.
• 10 or 15 dent reed.
• 2 shuttles, 2 bobbins.
• Special equipment needed: large steam pot with lid. Rack and a piece of cloth to make a “hammock” to hold fabric inside the pot while steaming.

Yarn Needed:

• One – 8 oz cone of 10/2 Tubular Spectrum™ mercerized cotton Yarn: Periwinkle and Teal.
• One – 1.5 oz cone of 10/2 Tubular Spectrum™ mercerized cotton Yarn: 5 Green Yellow, Violet, and Coral.
• One – 8 oz tube of 8/2 Orlec Yarn: Royal.

This vest was designed by Dianne Totten as part of our Master Weaver Series.

One-of-a-kind handwoven garments have been Dianne Totten’s focus with emphasis on garments using “crimp cloth,” a technique she developed and teaches nationally/internationally for guilds and conferences including Convergence. Dianne has been a weaver for 40 years and a teacher for twenty-five.  Her expertise in sewing complements her passion for weaving. In addition, she enjoys creating whimsical rag rugs, placemats, wall hangings, etc. with design inlay, a fun way to use up her fabric stash.  She teaches at John C. Campbell Folk School in NC as well as for guilds and regional conferences in the U.S. and Canada, and at Convergence.  She has two crimp cloth DVD’s available and has been published in SS&D, Handwoven, Weavers, Complex Weavers Journal, and Vävmagasinet, as well as Catherine Ellis’ book, Woven Shibori, Revised and Updated, IP, 2016.
