Lunar Year of the Dragon- Blog Post

Welcome to the Lunar Year of the Wood Dragon!!

In the Lunar Calendar, this is the year of the Wood Dragon.  The Dragon is the strongest and most creative of the characters in the Chinese Zodiac – and it is the only mythical creature.  The natural element of wood softens the dragon a bit and brings it down to earth.  We are anticipating a year of powerful and down to earth magic!!!

Innovation, Creativity and Energy!

It is said that the Dragon inspires innovation, and the fiber arts are an endless source of innovation.  You can combine yarns in new ways, try a new draft or technique that you haven't explored before.  Use a tool in a new way to make your time at the loom easier.  Like using a 4.5 yard warping board to warp your rigid heddle loom!  Or even teach a fellow guild member a fun way to knit that you learned on your travels to faraway places!

Let's use this year to fly to great heights and create our own unique perspective on the world!  What will you create in this year of high energy?

Time to combine things in new ways!

We have been inspired by Giovanna Imperia and Denise Kovnat to combine unusual and interesting materials with our favorite fibers.

  • Have you seen the Simply Irresistible Scarves?  Combine cotton yarn with an elastic to make some scrunch happen on your loom.
  • Or combine hemp and cotton yarns to make some fabulous towels that get better with each washing.  The Tidepool Treasure towels have a scrumptious combination of hemp and mercerized cotton yarns.  Or the Enchanted windowpane towels have delightful combination of hemp and sustainably grown American Maid, naturally colored unmercerized cotton yarn.
  • Give the gorgeous nontraditional Abigail gimp yarns a try.  They will bring some sparkle into any project.  Add some to your warp for a few subtle stripes of shimmer or slip some into the weft and make your scarf glow!
  • This is a great year to try something different!

Let's Learn Something New!

The Year of the Wood Dragon is a great time to learn a new skill or strengthen those habits that we use all the time.  We have two great online learning opportunities that now have openings!

For the last two years, we Lunatics have publicly written out our intentions for the new year.  Throughout the year we asked ourselves how we were meeting or changing those intentions and it has been a subtle guide to the year.  We found that we borrowed from each other's intentions and worked together to make them happen in ways that we didn't anticipate at the beginning of the year.

We wanted to share our intentions with you all again this year.  We hope it sparks creativity in all of us and perhaps those sparks will ignite something in you too!

Katzy:  My intention is to focus on Core Strength.  I would like to use the year of the dragon theme to strengthen all aspects of my life:  business, personal and my overall creativity.

Michele:  My personal intention is to simplify.  I’m not sure how this will manifest itself, but I’m looking forward to finding out.

Jenne:  My intention is centered around Maintaining Stability:  Continue to work on follow through, finishing projects, but also finding balance.  Less Stress, more play.  And ask for help when I get stuck.

Amber:  I’d like to take more time to focus on things that make me happy.  Slow down and enjoy life.  Perhaps this year I will create my own crochet pattern.
