Poetic Placemats Instructions


If you follow these instructions, you will end up with 4 beautiful placemats that all have a different look.  You will learn to do 4 types of finger manipulated edging techniques to create 4 beautiful placemats.  Mix and match or choose your favorites.  Think of them as samplers you can use.


Project Description:  Four placemats, 13” x 19.5” finished size.  Instructions for using a Rigid Heddle loom to weave these placemats.  Woven with plain weave background and various finger manipulated weaves for added visual interest on the placemats. You will warp your loom, weave 2 placemats, and then warp it again to weave 2 more placemats.

Equipment Needed:

  • Rigid Heddle Loom with at least 15-inch weaving width, 8 dent reed.
  • Weaving sword (for leno, Mexican Lace or Brook’s bouquet), stick or boat shuttle
  • To make the Hemp Placemats:  2- 6 ply 400g Spool Hemp, and one 3 ply Skein of coordinating Hemp yarn for the hems.
  • To make the Cotton Placemats: One 1-lb cone of 3/2 American Maid Natural White Yarn, one mini cone of 3/2 American Maid Dark Brown or Dark Green Yarn for accents, and one mini cone of 6/2 American Maid Natural White Yarn
