Party with Playing Cards – Blog Post

snowflakes

It’s December, and in the Northern Hemisphere, we are gearing up for winter.  Snowflakes fly in the crisp air, trees are frosted with icy crystals, and the warm scents of cinnamon, maple syrup, and buttered toast are everywhere.  And all the delicious indoor time is often filled with parties!

Playing with color is an ideal way to amuse yourself and your friends at a party!  We like to use our Playing with Color Card sets to play games as well as use them as a design tool.

Play Time!

At Your Next Guild Meeting:

Use the cards to play a “get to know you” game by having everyone pick a card.  Sit with another member who has:

  • A Card with the same Value,
  • Or a Complementary Color,
  • Or a Card with the same Hue Family,
  • Or locate someone wearing an item of clothing that is close to the hue on your card.

Make a stripe sequence with your guild. Have everyone pick a card:

  • Arrange yourselves in rainbow order,
  • Or arrange yourselves from dark to light using value,
  • Or arrange yourselves by hue family,
  • Or arrange yourselves by alternating complementary colors.

Help!  I need Inspiration!

Pull out the cards and play with colorful designs.

Choose a hue family and pull out all the cards belonging to that hue. Like the Blue Family.  Then, select a complement and decide how to use those colors in a stripe sequence.  10 Yellow Red adds some interest to the combination!  Vary the proportion of the colors and let the complementary color be the little spark in the design that makes everything pop!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pick 3 colors at random. Is there one color that stands out to you?  If it pleases you, build a design around that one with the others as bits along the way.  Sky Blue with a bit of the 2 red colors could be interesting.  If it is not pleasing to you, can you think of a way to make you like it?  Maybe use just a tiny bit of it.  Or use it as weft in a warp-dominant fabric.
