Textiles are one of humanity’s oldest and most influential technologies, but nowadays most people take them for granted. Drawing on her widely praised new book The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World, author Virginia Postrel will take us on a tour of some of the innovations–in fiber, spinning, weaving, and dyeing–that gave us today’s textile abundance and the ways textiles shaped civilization as we know it.

This 1-hour seminar will be presented by Virginia Postrel on August 27, 2022 via Zoom.  One week prior to the seminar you will receive a zoom link to attend the session.  Participation is limited to 100.

The seminar will be presented from 12-1 pm Mountain Daylight Time.  Please check to see how that corresponds to your local time to make sure you don’t miss the presentation.  There will be a recording of this seminar, and participants will have access to that recording for 2 weeks following the seminar.

Virginia Postrel

Virginia Postrel (pron. PAH-STRELL) is an author, columnist, and speaker whose work spans a broad range of topics, from social science to fashion, concentrating on the intersection of culture, commerce, and technology. She is a visiting fellow at the Smith Institute for Political Economy and Philosophy at Chapman University, where she teaches classes combining the humanities and economics.

Her latest book The Fabric of Civilization: How Textiles Made the World, examines the development of technology, industry, and commerce through the history of textiles, from prehistoric times to the near future. Postrel’s previous books include The Power of Glamour: Longing and the Art of Visual Persuasion (2013), The Substance of Style (2003), and The Future and Its Enemies (1998). She is a regular columnist for Bloomberg Opinion.
