Tow hemp can be spun from fibers that are nearly as long as line flax or very short approaching cotton. Tow yarns can have more “character” in the form of slubs and other imperfections. Hemp fabric is crisp but will soften with each washing.
This 100% hemp yarn came to us as a mill end, so we cannot be positive of it’s origin, but it is a similar yarn to other tow hemp yarns to come from China. We have a limited supply of this yarn, and when it runs out, we do not know if we can purchase any more.
Sold on 1 lb cones. 10N/2 denier. Approximately 2,650 yards per pound.
It combines wonderfully with either 10/2 or 8/2 cotton. Use the hemp as either the warp or weft, and use the cotton yarn as the other. Please be aware that if you combine the hemp and cotton yarns in the warp, you may end up with seersucker fabric with the differential shrinkage…interesting and wonderful if that was what you had in mind…not pleasing if you didn’t want it.
This tow hemp yarn also combines well with our other 2 ply hemp yarns, both the firefly dyed colors and the Romanian hemp. The woven samples shown on the product page show a towel woven with the 2 ply tow hemp (natural color) 2 ply Bleached white Romanian hemp (white yarn) and Firefly hemp yarn as the accent.
